A Simple Guide to Security Screens: 5 things you need to know about Security Screens

Mar 28, 2023

When selecting the ideal security screens, there’s more than meets the eye. Ensure you make a smart choice by considering all relevant factors – from material to style and installation.

1. Frame

  • When it comes to security screen frame materials, aluminum, and steel are your two main options. Powder-coated aluminum frames are becoming increasingly popular since they provide optimal durability and extra protection from corrosion. Forget about spending time working on maintenance – powder-coated aluminum frames stand strong against heat, so you can take a break from worrying and enjoy your summertime!
  • Ensure the frame is designed with a deep receiver channel so that the mesh won’t easily be pushed out of place. Sturdiness should be of utmost importance when connecting the main part and the receiver channel for ultimate durability.
  • The frame should also be reinforced at the corners. Fasolid frame’s internal corner stakes are invisibly installed from inside of the frame yet pack a punch when it comes to supporting.

2. Infill

  • For maximum security with minimal obstruction of your view, stainless steel mesh is the ideal choice. Unlike traditional metal bars, this solution offers the same visibility that nylon screens do while still being effective in keeping unwanted intruders out.
  • To ensure maximum protection from intruders and flying objects during severe weather conditions, a 12×12 weave per square inch with .035” wire diameter is your best bet—not only for defense but also for letting in the right amount of pass-thru light from outside. While some companies may try to lure you into buying cheaper products made of 10×10 weaves (less dense) and thinner wires, settling will ultimately leave you wishing that you had paid more attention when quality mattered most!

3. Locks and Hinges

  • Among the critical elements of high-quality security screens are their locks and hinges.
  • Ideally, you should opt for a five-pin cylinder lock or equivalent, plus make sure the security screen uses a three-point lock system. It reinforces both the top and bottom of the door, making it more difficult for an intruder to gain unwanted entry.
  • The hinges should be recessed or the door should have a hinge filling between the door and the frame that doesn’t allow access for jimmying.
  • It’s advisable you select a supplier that offers locks and hinges made by quality brands.

4. Custom Made

Get the security door you need without compromising on fitment. With Fasolid’s custom-made screens, each one tailored to your specific needs so that it fits perfectly and won’t be removed easily – feel secure in knowing your home has only the best protection.

5. Fire Safety

In the event of an emergency such as a fire or other dangerous situation, you need to be able to get out quickly and easily. That’s why we have ADA-compliant egress handles on all our screens – just flip and push for easy escape like a car door!
